It seems like things are moving slow at the little house, but then I remind myself we haven’t owned it that long. Cam and I did not give ourselves a deadline to have the house finished, for the very reason we didn’t want to put a crazy amount of pressure on ourselves.
Cam (along with help from friends and family) has done the demo. We are getting to a point where we can start putting it back together but there are a lot of boring things that have to happen before the fun really starts!
I found a couple of fun things in this house that I thought y’all would appreciate. One is a soapstone/concrete sink in the basement. Similar to these:
I noticed it when we first looked at the house in October and when we bought it I really wanted to include it in the remodel of the kitchen. I read several articles about how to restore them and reuse them. I even talked to our cabinet maker about working it in, but eventually I decided to hold onto it and use it later in our own home. Cam and I have a dream of building someday and love the idea of including pieces we have gathered along the way.
The second thing we found that we were so excited about was pine floors upstairs under years of carpet. They need a lot of love to get them around, but I met with a local contractor who specializes in redoing wood floors and he gave me hope that we could get them looking beautiful again! The majority of the main floor is oak and we are so pumped to give all the wood flooring some love!
When we first started the renovation it was really important to me to keep as much of the original pieces of the home as possible. But when it came to windows we hit a bit of a roadblock…Years of painting over chipped paint, single pane and not a darn one that opened. Since our dream is for this house to be a cozy nightly rental, we eventually decided to go with all new windows. The little house has plenty of windows (over 30), so I am going to have a lot of old windows on my hands soon. I am going to save them in hopes of someday building a greenhouse out of them like these:
We have also been working on a name for the little house…I have a couple of ideas, but nothing for sure as of yet.
We are enjoying this process so much…of course there are down days, but for the most part we are doing our best to savor the time and can’t wait to see her finished and looking pretty again!
I look forward to the day when we can share more updates and even pictures! Hopefully soon!
